# Updating bayesian priors

It is used in some machine learning algorithms and allows us to update probabilities when we get new data. Before we can get started we have to recap the Bayes’ Theorem as that is what Bayesian Updating is based on. The types A, B, C have probabilities for tails of 0.5, 0.6 and 0.9, respectively. Our likelihoods are: , , Posterior The posterior probability is the probability after we updated the prior probabilities, so the probabilities for each hypothesis given the data. The Bayes’ Theorem allows us to invert conditioned probabilities: where H stands for our hypothesis and D for our data. Our posteriors are: , , We can see that a type A coin is still the most likely even though it lost some of its probability.fishery target species, geographical location), and lack a closer interaction with stakeholders. Here, we present a novel approach consisting of a modular Bayesian model, which can incorporate any relevant explanatory variable, independently of data availability.Minimizing the probability of discards is an important step in mitigating environmental impacts of fishing activities and maximizing economic gains from fish stocks.Although several discard models have been recently developed, current approaches are still unable to robustly adjust to different circumstances (e.g.The relationships between the variables and discard rates are initially delineated by stakeholders through surveys, and included to the model as priors. The priors are then used together with observed data for estimating posterior distributions of discard probability.

The hypothesis H is often denoted and the data is often written as x = something. Of course we want to update again and again and don’t worry that is easier than you might think.

We get closer and closer to the exciting, interesting parts of data science. Or in mathematical terms, what is: , , Priors Priors are the prior probabilities for the hypotheses. Our priors are: , , That is because we have a total of four coins in the drawer of which are two type A one type B and one type C.

Bayesian Inference or more precisely Bayesian updating is one part of that. Likelihood The likelihood is the probability that a coin lands tails.

In this module, we will work with conditional probabilities, which is the probability of event B given event A.

Conditional probabilities are very important in medical decisions.

We will soon do some experiments involving Bayesian Updating, so we can deepen our understanding and do some practical work and not just try to remember things or stick to the theoretical part.
